The land that makes up Llano County has attracted human exploration and settlement throughout history. Ancient Indians lived near the Llano River for centuries, attracted by the clear waters and abundant game. Spanish explorers arrived in this area searching for and finding gold and silver. Early pioneers came to the region for the abundant mineral-rich grasses and establish successful farms and ranches. Prospectors and miners followed, and they located and harvested the precious metals and rock from the Llano uplift. Llano is the only county in America that can claim a world-famous rock – Llanite. The rich deposits found in the area have contributed to manufacturing and industry in the United States and developing countries.

Today, people arrive in Llano to enjoy the rich history and participate in numerous outdoor activities including camping, fishing, hunting, hiking, canoeing, kayaking, bird watching, archeology, rock and mineral hunting, and gold prospecting.
